ALCEN
Advanced technology at the service of innovation

Ambition
ALCEN works in 5 fields:
- Defence & Security
- Energy
- Medical & Healthcare
- Aeronautics and Space
- Large Scientific Instruments
ALCEN's ambition is to establish an ongoing policy of innovation applied first and foremost to its own products and services.
To do this, it is developing a particularly extensive in-house technological base. It works closely with research centres, systematically transfers technological developments and feedback from one field to the others and develops its technologies in specialist laboratories organised around a limited number of top experts.
ALCEN constructs an original and comprehensive technological model that benefits from incredible productivity.
Organisation
ALCEN favours setting up subsidiaries for its activities in units focused on one technology.
ALCEN has put in place a method of governance and develops proven expertise in management of its subsidiaries encouraging genuine internal synergy.
This method of organisation is, along with technological differentiation, the key to its success.
Partnerships
ALCEN has a large number of laboratories working on a range of technologies. In order to make its ambitions compatible with its means, it has also developed collaboration expertise with external research centres. Thus, over the years, it has forged links with the CEA Military Applications Division (DAM), the CEA Technological Research Division (DRT), the CEA Fundamental Research Division (DRF), CNRS laboratories, Ifremer, the BRGM (French Geological Survey) and ONERA (the French Aerospace Lab), and with schools and universities.
As part of its partnership approach, it favours "applied" research, i.e. research on a specific product from the outset.
It is part of ALCEN's culture to use the technological knowledge acquired in the partnership to fields other than those initially chosen.
Subsidiaries

ALSOLEN develops medium-power Fresnel reflector solar thermal power plants (up to 100 MWth or 20 MWe) known by the same name, ALSOLEN. These use oil as the heat transfer fluid and have a direct rock-bed thermocline thermal storage system. The heat transfer fluid reaches a temperature of 300 °C and transfers its thermal energy to applications that, depending on the needs of users, can be combined between: electricity, industrial heat, cold and desalination of seawater. ALSOLEN solar power plants are more specifically designed for operation in an isolated or semi-isolated grid and require an operating level that is not very restrictive.
The originality of ALSOLEN solar thermal power plants lies in part in their design, which incorporates as much manufacturing as possible on the installation site (thanks to the use of a mobile factory), high performance, low, easy maintenance, and a long service life. Integrated thermal storage is used to obtain operational autonomy appropriate to the needs of users, even several hours after sunset.
The technology used for each application corresponds to the design strategy of ALSOLEN power plants. The electricity generation applications use an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), the cold is generated by an absorption chiller enabling negative temperatures to be reached and fresh water by multi-effect distillation.
All of the ALSOLEN power plant development work has been done in conjunction with CEA LITEN and ALCEN subsidiaries.
A high-power thermal solar power plant (50 MWe and above) called ALSOLEN SUP is at an advanced stage of development. The ALSOLEN SUP technology will directly generate steam superheated to 450 °C and will have a three-stage thermal storage capacity. It will present specific clean innovations to the market and benefit from ALSOLEN innovations.

With over 20 years of existence and experience, ITHPP has become the French leader in high-pulsed power and high-power microwave technologies.
Driven by customer specifications, IHTPP designs and manufactures highly adapted and innovative systems linking the technologies to scientific research, civil and military applications.
High Pulsed Power technologies allow the amplification of electrical power delivery over a shorter burst duration. Since energy is the product of power over time, by maintaining a constant flow of energy and reducing the duration of the pulse it is possible to achieve powers in excess of a hundred Gigawatts.
High Powered Microwaves are very highly charged electromagnetic pulsations capable of disturbing and even destroying electronic components used in increasingly complex systems. The interest in these high powered microwaves are due to the vast array of usages, varying from more classic usages (Radar types) to more advanced technologies, such as those used in Electronic Warfare.

ALSEAMAR, under the BMTI brand, formulates, manufactures and sells pure syntactic foam for very deep subsea buoyancy applications (1,000 to 11,000 m). This material made from glass and epoxy resin microspheres is able to conserve high level properties even after demanding subsea use: immersion in seawater, hydrostatic pressure of several hundred bar, temperature stability and long-term.
Through proprietary formulations and associated manufacturing processes, BMTI is unique in that it offers different ranges of world-class syntactic foam: low or very low density even at great depth, enhanced mechanical properties, thermal stability if required, etc.
BMTI has developed unique and integrated means and test procedures in house to guarantee high-performance buoyancy products: permanent floats of several tonnes of thrust for oil and gas, buoyancy modules for ROVs and AUVs, buoyancy for subsea tools, etc.
Our production equipment enables us to be very responsive and maintain the whole float manufacturing chain, which is an important advantage of this sector.

The METHAMOD® line consists in a set of inter-seasonal electricity storage solutions in the form of green methane than can be used to recycle CO2 emissions (Carbon Capture and Use). It builds the energy conversion chain into a methane gas vector (Power to gas), providing a storage service over time and a service to balance the grid. This conversion chain targets renewable and/or decarbonised sources of electricity. The synthetic methane thus obtained is also renewable and/or decarbonised. This “green” origin can therefore benefit from a green certificate known as “guaranteed origin”.
This green methane can be stored locally, used for all the end uses of natural gas (electricity production, mobility, industry, heating, etc.), or be injected into the existing natural gas transport and distribution system.
METHAMOD® Reactor is the core technology. It is a highly compact OEM reactor configured for catalytic methanation. Its function is to convert a gas mixture composed of H2 (Dihydrogen), of CO2 (Carbon dioxide) and/or CO (Carbon monoxide) into CH4(Methane) and H2O (water). The methanation reaction is highly heat generating and requires perfect control over the reactor cooling, which is made possible by the METHAMOD® plate reactor-exchanger design.
METHAMOD® Box is a fully modular and configurable methanation system. Its architecture provides an extension to synthetic green methane production to the clients’ specifications by implementing parallel METHAMOD® Reactor modules and serial conversion and/or separation modules that multiply the unit capacity of a reactor “infinitely” (production from a few Nm3/h to several hundred Nm3/h).
METHAMOD® Energy On-Demand is the most complete offer in the line. It is an integrated on demand Power to gas solution designed to produce synthetic green methane to the required specifications using electricity and carbon. This system includes all the control command elements and the installation monitoring and control equipment.

The ALCEN Corporate Foundation
Ambition: to raise awareness and knowledge of energies
Energy is a vital issue for the balance of the world. So the relevant decisions taken are all the more critical because they will have long term effects. Informing the public successfully can help to influence decisions at the right moment.
The Foundation created at the initiative of ALCEN aims to enhance the general public's knowledge of energies. It is a non-profit-making organisation, which chooses and publishes relevant information on energies, whatever they may be. It has a desire to provide education and access to as many people as possible. In this respect, it differs from a research centre and, in essence, it is free of any commercial or political dimension.
Its core values are neutrality, clarity and teaching
In its work, the Foundation relies on the Expert Committee, which validates all teaching content prior to publication. Recognised for their knowledge of the different types of energy (oil, renewable, nuclear, etc.) or the related issues (geopolitics, economics, etc.), the experts ensure the quality of the information circulated and protect the principle of neutrality and objectivity.
